Major Kuppanda Ponnappa Nanjappa, who was commanding a company of Kumaon Regiment, was assigned the task of capturing an enemy strong point in the Eastern Sector. This was a well-fortified position and its capture was vital for the subsequent operation in this area. In spite of heavy and accurate shelling and small arms fire, Major Nanjappa, with utter disregard for his safety, led his men and captured the objective after fierce fighting.

In this action, Major Nanjappa displayed gallantry, determination and leadership of a high order.
