During the operations against Pakistan in December 1971, Lieutenant Suresh Kumar Mitter was the commanding officer of a naval unit. Braving enemy shore defences and aircraft, he attacked the port of Mongla with extreme devotion to duty disrupting all sea traffic. His actions finally resulted in the whole of the Pusur River being denied to the enemy. On 10 December, he was with a force, which attacked Khulna. His ship came under very heavy enemy air and shore gun attacks but he continued to carry out his attack, which finally resulted in the capture of Khulna Port.
