On 9 November 1999, Sepoy Manoj Kumar Singh was part of the Ghatak platoon when the enemy launched an attack on our post in a forward area in Jammu & Kashmir. The attack was successfully repulsed and the enemy was made to retreat. Seizing the opportunity, an operation was launched to pursue the fleeing enemy.
Sepoy Manoj Kumar Singh was part of No. 1 Ghatak team, which was tasked for destruction of enemy post, located at a height of 11,200 feet. The enemy had resorted to heavy artillery, mortar and small arms fire. Heavy snowfall and poor visibility made it more difficult for the platoon. Undeterred by the hostile weather and enemy fire, Sepoy Manoj Kumar Singh and his buddy charged with fury on to the enemy bunker and after lobbing a hand grenade killed two enemy soldiers in a fierce hand-to-hand fight.
This act of bravery inspired his team members who fell upon the enemy with vengeance. He then destroyed next bunker by pole charge. However while charging he was hit by a rocket propelled grenade and was thrown off into a gorge. He was later declared "presumed dead. In this operation 17 enemy soldiers were killed, 14 bunkers destroyed and large quantity of arms and ammunition was captured from the enemy post.
Sepoy Manoj Kumar Singh displayed conspicuous bravery, raw courage and extraordinary example of gallantry while fighting the enemy. He made the supreme sacrifice in the best traditions of the Indian Army.
