Citation

On 13 December 1971, Major Abjeet Singh Mamik, commanding a company of 11 Gorkha Rifles, was ordered to capture a strongly held enemy position in the Eastern Sector. The enemy opened up with heavy and accurate machine gun fire, pinning down the troops. Undeterred, he pressed forward, leading his men and encouraging them to close with the enemy. His men rallied behind him and fighting from bunker- to-bunker succeeded in penetrating the enemy defences. The enemy fled leaving behind many dead and large quantities of equipment. Major Mamik in a swift action surrounded the enemy company headquarters, forcing the company commander to surrender. In this action, Major Mamik displayed gallantry, determination and leadership of a high order.
