A Battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles was occupying a defensive position approximately 400 metres from enemy defences in an area in the Eastern Sector. After intense bombardment, the enemy attacked the position in strength. Lance Naik Magar Singh, who was commanding the forward most section, inspired his men to repulse the attack. One of the artillery shells landed near the LMG post injuring the crew.

With utter disregard for his personal safety he jumped out of his trench, rushed to the LMG post, brought the LMG to his own trench and continued firing, inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy, thereby blunting the attack. He was hit by a shell splinter and died at his post. In this action, Lance Naik Magar Singh displayed commendable courage and determination.
