During the battle of Dograi village, after Sepoy Lehna Singh's company had captured the northern edge of the village, it came under intense enemy shelling and machine gun fire. To cut of the retreating enemy, Sepoy Lehna Singh took up a position with a light machine gun, exposed to the enemy fire.

Without regard for his own safety, he occupied the exposed position all alone and with his light machine gun killed at least 30 of the enemy and destroyed four vehicles
