When the enemy attacked the position of a Sikh Regiment battalion in the Walong area in NEFA on 23 October, 1962, mortar bombs and small ammunition were urgently needed in the forward defended localities. All the combatants were engaged in the priority task of improving the defences. Realising the situation, Havildar Kirpa Ram, battalion bootmaker, volunteered, and persuaded all other tradesmen and non-combatants to undertake the task of carrying the ammunition. By his personal example and initiative, he inspired his comrades to work round-the-clock to complete the task in time.
