Citation
At Poonch, on the morning of 15 April 1948, 3/9 GR was ordered to capture a feature held by an enemy company. Rifleman Nanda Bahadur Khattri was the leading man in the right forward section. As he approached the objective, the enemy opened heavy automatic and rifle fire from one bunker position. He rushed ahead of his section on his own initiative and though wounded by a grenade thrown at him by the enemy, continued his assault single-handed, and threw a grenade into the enemy bunker. The enemy left two wounded in the bunker and fled. Rifleman N B Khattri still did not give up the pursuit, but ran down the opposite slope, again single-handed, and succeeded in wounding another enemy and capturing one rifle.
This outstanding display of dash, daring and initiative undoubtedly contributed to the success of the company. His example was an inspiration to his platoon and his total disregard for personal safety certainly saved the company from suffering larger casualties.
