On 20 October 1962, the advance dressing station of a field ambulance in NEFA came under heavy shelling from Chinese guns and later under heavy small arms fire. In this firing an officer was hit by a burst from an automatic weapon and fell to the ground.
In spite of the heavy enemy fire Sepoy S. Joseph rushed forward to render first aid to this officer and to evacuate him, but on reaching the casualty he was himself killed. Sepoy Joseph thus bravely sacrificed his own life in trying to save the life of a wounded officer. This act of courage and self-sacrifice was in the highest traditions of our Army.
