Citation

On the night of 13 September 1948, during an attack on a hill feature in the Zojila Pass area, Sepoy Jai Pal was No. 2 Bren gunner of the leading platoon. He was badly wounded in the stomach by an enemy grenade and his intestines were bulging out. He pushed them back and asked another sepoy who was near him to apply first field dressing. After this, he pressed on, threw two hand grenades into an enemy bunker and killed two men.

Even after sustaining such a severe injury, Sepoy Jai Pal insisted on remaining with his section until his platoon had reached the objective. He then walked back to the regimental aid post-a distance of about 2 1/2 miles. A very remarkable feat.
