Citation

On 20 May 1948, during an attack on a feature in Machhoi in J&K, Sepoy Jagat Ram was doing medical orderly duty with the company headquarters. After the capture of the hill he went down the hill to attend to the casualties. Although the enemy had retired from the hilltop, some of the snipers were still active. He took no notice of the fire, went down and started dressing the wounded soldiers when he was hit in the shoulder. His wounded comrades suggested that he should get away to a safer place, but he insisted on finishing his job. He was approaching another casualty when he was again hit in the neck and died.

Sepoy Jagat Ram displayed selfless devotion to duty and bravery. He gave his life so that others may live.
