Citation

Subedar Hoshiar Singh was platoon commander of "C" company. On 20 October 1987 the battalion was involved in the clearing of Jaffna Town. During the house-to house fighting, Subedar Hoshiar Singh was leading his platoon for the capture of Jaffna Town Public Library. The concrete building was converted into fortified defences held by approximately 8 to 10 LTTE personnel with automatic weapons. The area was heavily mined and booby-trapped. The withering fire brought down by the LTTE entirely pinned down the platoon.

But Subedar Hoshiar Singh, with utter disregard of his personal safety, in an act of courage, charged the house with grenades and bayonet and almost single-handedly reduced the position. In the process, Subedar Hoshiar Singh was grievously injured and lost his life.
