Awardee: Hanumana Ram VrC
Citation
On 15 June 1948, when the enemy counter-attacked one of our picquets, Rifleman Hanumana Ram with a Bren gun was occupying the foremost position in that picquet. He was constantly under heavy small arms, medium machine gun and mortar fire but stayed on. When the enemy came close he opened fire at pointblank range, killed two men and stopped the enemy advance. Due to mechanical stoppage in the Bren gun he could not engage more and so came back and took another gun and while returning to his original post was hit in the abdomen by an enemy bullet He tied his own first field dressing and kept on firing till he was removed in a semi-unconscious state. He had shown courage, devotion to duty and esprit de corps under very adverse circumstances by stopping the advance.
