Vir Chakra (VrC)

On 6 Decemberl971, Lieutenant Colonel Ran Bahadur Gurung, commanding a battalion of 11th Gorkha Rifles, was following closely behind the assaulting company of his battalion during the attack of the enemy post in the Kargil Sector. The enemy brought down intense artillery and mortar fire and opened up with machine guns, inflicting heavy casualties on the assaulting troops. Realising the importance of silencing the enemy machine guns, Lieutenant Colonel Gurung charged the enemy medium machine gun bunker with a handful of men and destroyed the gun post.

In this action, Lieutenant Colonel Gurung displayed gallantry and leadership of a high order.
