Citation

During the attack on Top Sanjoi in Jammu & Kashmir, Subedar Man Bahadur Gurung was platoon commander of the assaulting company of 3/8 GR on 3 September 1965. As his platoon drew close to the position, the enemy opened up heavy and effective fire, it was difficult to make further progress unless the strongly entrenched medium and light machine gun and rocket launcher nests were destroyed.

By a bold manoeuvre, he secured the enemy's right flank and fired four rockets on the enemy strong points. Then he charged the enemy's forward positions and jumped on to the bunkers. Another enemy light machine gun now opened fire from his right flank. He crawled behind the enemy position, threw two hand grenades into it and fired bursts from his sten gun. He then charged inside the bunker with his khukri, cutting down the enemy gunners and paving the way for further advance.

Throughout this operation, Subedar Gurung displayed great valour, determination and devotion to duty, which was a source of inspiration to his men
