A company group of 6/8 Gorkha Rifles was operating on a search-and-destroy mission under the command of Colonel Vijay Kumar Bakshi on 2 March 1989. Lance Naik Kumar Singh Gurung was the Radio Operator, manning radio set ANPRC 25, of Officer Commanding "C" Company who was accompanying Colonel Bakshi in the search-and-destroy mission in the Alampil Jungles in the Vavuniya Sector of Sri Lanka, strongest hold of the militants in the whole of the Sri Lanka Island. From 1st to 3rd March 1989, he was surrounded by approximately 150 to 200 militants and came under intensive small arms automatic fire.

Notwithstanding, the NCO accompanied the Company Commander and without any regard for his personal safety and life, continued to provide effective communication for conduct of the battle. Despite being a signaller, Lance Naik Kumar Singh Gurung fought gallantly with his own weapon alongside the Company Commander, and simultaneously maintained communication till he was hit by militant fire. This act of Lance Naik Kumar Singh Gurung helped in liquidating a large number of militants. He died when hit by the militants' automatic weapons fire at very close range. Throughout the operation, Lance Naik Kumar Singh Gurung displayed conspicuous courage and valour in the face of the militants.
