During "Operation Vijay", Lance Naik Khushiman Gurung was part of Delta Company of 1 NAGA assigned to attack Point 5140 in Drass Sector. The position was occupied by infiltrators from across the border, who had established proper defences on the heights. The enemy post was well stocked and fortified. Prior to the attack, effective artillery shelling was brought on the enemy. With the presumption that the enemy had almost been neutralised by the artillery shelling, the company closed in to the objective. When they reached very close, the enemy sprung up from defences in large numbers and brought heavy universal machine gun, heavy machine gun and small arms fire on the Delta Company. As a result the company commander and thirteen jawans including Lance Naik Khushiman Gurung were injured.

While he others withdrew, Lance Naik Gurung not only continued to fire but also pulled the company commander and other casualties behind the available shelter from where they were subsequently evacuated to a safe place. This act of Lance Naik Khushiman Gurung not only helped in killing of several enemy soldiers but also ensured safety of own casualties which he achieved with utter disregard to his own life.
