On 18 November 1962, the Chinese attacked Gurung Hill in the Chushul area in Ladakh. Our artillery defensive fire was controlled by an observation post, whose commander 2nd Lieutenant S.D. Goswami was seriously wounded in the action and became unconscious. Technical Assistant Gurdeep Singh, though wounded himself, took over command for the post and continued to direct the fire of our artillery on the enemy, inflicting heavy casualties on them.
