Citation

During the battle of the Basantar River, 4 Horse, which was establishing the bridgehead, came under heavy pressure, and it was decided to send additional armour into the bridgehead. An ad hoc force off our troops was formed, including the regimental and brigade headquarters troops, and placed under the command of Major Govind Singh. The enemy was attempting to move an armoured squadron to cut off our forces at Jarpal. Despite heavy shelling, Major Govind Singh moved forward with his own tank and destroyed two enemy tanks. By skillfully deploying the force under his command, he helped in repulsing repeated enemy attacks.

Throughout, Major Govind Singh displayed gallantry, initiative and leadership of a high order.
