Citation

On 13 September 1961, a company of Dogra Regiment, attacking an enemy position at Radio Katanga in Congo, faced fire from light machine guns, automatic rifles and grenades from all directions. Sepoy Goverdhan Singh located one of the light machine guns, which were preventing one of our sections from moving forward towards the objective. He jumped on the enemy position and turned the muzzle of the gun away from our troops and in close combat killed the personnel of the gendarmerie light machine gun detachment. In doing so he was badly wounded in the face but continued fighting till the entire enemy detachment was killed.

Sepoy Goverdhan Singh destroyed a dangerous enemy position and saved the lives of many of his comrades. In doing so he set an inspiring example of courage, determination and devotion to duty.
