Vir Chakra (VrC)
Awardee: Gian Singh VrC
Citation
Naib Subedar Gian Singh was on a patrol in the Amritsar Sector. The enemy opened up with heavy automatic and small arms fire. In utter disregard of his personal safety, he rushed forward and started returning the fire from behind the cover of a raised bund. He kept changing his position stealthily and continued to engage the enemy with great determination, grit and presence of mind in spite of being surrounded from three sides by the enemy. He drew maximum enemy fire on himself which enabled the rest of the patrol to take cover and deal with the situation. In this gallant act, he was hit by an enemy MMG burst, but he continued to engage the enemy till the last and later succumbed to his injuries.
In this action, Naib Subedar Gian Singh displayed gallantry, determination and leadership of a high order
