Citation
On 13 September 1961, Lance Naik Gian Singh was second-in-command of a section in Elizabethville in Congo, which had been ordered to clear the post office building of the gendarmerie. In the action, a burst from an enemy light machine gun hit him in the stomach and within seconds he was in a pool of blood.
Despite this, he continued to crawl to his selected firing position and engaged the enemy with sustained and accurate fire. Though bleeding profusely, he exhorted his men to continue the operation and allowed himself to be evacuated only when he saw that the mission had been successful.
Lance Naik Gian Singh displayed inspiring courage, determination and devotion to duty.
