Vir Chakra (VrC)

Second Lieutenant Devpal Singh B. Deval was commanding the leading platoon of 5th Gorkha Rifles during an assault on an enemy post in the Sylhet Sector. The post was well-fortified. The enemy brought down heavy and accurate artillery and medium machine gun fire on the platoon. Undeterred, he pressed home the assault, inspiring his men, and silencing bunker by bunker, till the enemy was finally neutralised. In a subsequent action, he was wounded but continued to fight till he succumbed to his wounds.

In these actions, Second Lieutenant Deval displayed gallantry, leadership and devotion to duty of a high order.
