Lieutenant Colonel Nirendra Chandra Das was an anesthetist in the surgical team of 60 Indian Field Ambulance, which took part in the airborne operation with 187 RCT behind the opposing force. Throughout this operation, though the surgical theatre was often under fire, he worked steadily to administer anesthesia to the seriously wounded and thus enabled the surgeon to perform essential and life-saving surgical operations.
He exhibited courageous determination, selfless devotion to duty, and great resourcefulness in the execution of his duties.
