He led a platoon entrusted with the task of preventing any intrusion by the enemy into our territory. The leading section of the patrol came under heavy automatic and small arms fire. Shri Dalal took a light machine gun himself, moved forward and engaged the enemy medium machine gun which was directly firing on the patrol. He silenced the enemy gun, but was hit by an MMG burst fired from the other direction. He was seriously injured and bleeding profusely but undaunted he kept the enemy engaged with his light machine gun fire till his men withdrew to an alternative position where he succumbed to his injuries.
