Citation

Major Kailaina Chongthu, commanding a company of Kumaon Regiment, was ordered to capture a well-fortified enemy position consisting of a network of bunkers in the Eastern Sector. On the night before the attack he crawled up to the enemy defence and had a close look in spite of the enemy being on alert. Next night he led his company into the assault. The enemy brought down heavy artillery and medium machine gun fire on the company. Although Major Chongthu was injured in his leg and arm, he continued to inspire his men and directed the successful capture of a foothold in the main defence after about eleven hours of continuous fighting. Several enemy attacks to dislodge them were also successfully beaten back under his able leadership.

In this action, Major Kailaina Chongthu displayed gallantry, leadership and devotion to duty of a high order.
