Vir Chakra (VrC)

On 18 September 1965, a battalion of Gorkha Rifles was ordered to capture a feature west of Akhnoor, which the enemy had occupied. Naib Subedar Ram Prasad Chhetri who was in command of a platoon, was assigned the task of capturing the strongly defended enemy depth localities. As the company was closing in, Naib Subedar Ram Prasad was hit by enemy MMG fire. Undaunted, he continued creeping forward and noticing an enemy soldier, fired at him and subsequently overpowered him. Naib Subedar Ram Prasad was now at the point of collapse and was evacuated. The feature was eventually captured.

In this action, Naib Subedar Ram Prasad displayed courage and determination of a high order.
