Citation
Sepoy Birdha Ram was a member of the crew of the recoilless gun detachment of a battalion of Rajput Regiment, which had established a roadblock behind the enemy, defences in an area in the Eastern Sector. On 15 December 1971, the enemy made determined attempts to dislodge the battalion and brought heavy machine gun and mortar fire to bear on the area in which the recoilless gun was located. A direct hit destroyed the recoilless gun position, wounding the No. 2 of the detachment. Sepoy Birdha Ram took over the recoilless gun and without any regard for his own safety, moved forward and destroyed the medium machine gun post. While moving to another position, he was hit in the chest and killed on the spot.
