Awardee: Vijay Kumar Bhaskar VrC
Citation
Major Vijay Kumar Bhaskar was commanding a field company of an Engineer Regiment in the Shakargarh Sector. On 6 December 1971, our offensive operations were held up by the enemy minefield and it was essential to breach them speedily. Although the obstacle was covered by enemy small arms and artillery fire and a bridgehead had not been established, Major Bhaskar entered the minefield alone in broad daylight and reconnoitered the obstacle up to a depth of 400 metres, establishing the enemy pattern of mine laying and the depth of the minefield.
His bold and courageous action and complete disregard of personal safety enabled subsequent breaching operations to be carried out with speed.
In this action, Major Bhaskar displayed gallantry, determination and devotion to duty of a high order.
