Citation

On 1 February 1948, during a fighting patrol to village Bararipura in Kashmir, Sepoy Ami Lal was rifle group commander of the leading section. As soon as the section reached the village, the enemy, who was hiding in the houses and the nullahs around the village, suddenly threw grenades and opened rifle fire. Sepoy Ami Lal was hit by a bullet in his chest as a result of which he fell down. His section commander and two sepoys who were with him were also wounded.

The enemy, on seeing that he had succeeded in hitting all of the leading four men, advanced to charge the remainder of the section with bayonets fixed. No sooner Sepoy Ami Lal, who was semi-unconscious, saw the enemy advancing, then he picked up his rifle and engaged them killing two instantaneously and wounding three.
