Citation
Captain Sunit Barnie was the Post Commander of a very sensitive post called 'Hump' located approximately 150 metres from the Line of control. On 8April1995 at about 1940 hours, the enemy started firing at the post. Taking advantage of the firing, some militants crept in close to the post from the West and started firing rockets and small arms. Unmindful of the heavy enemy fire and disregarding his personal safety, he moved the MMG single-handedly to another position from where he could effectively neutralise the rocket fire. A rocket fired by the militants landed in his close proximity and he was hit by a sharpnel in the left groin. Despite being seriously wounded he continued to engage the militants till their fire was suppressed and they finally fled. But such was his injury that he succumbed to his wounds enroute to hospital on 9April1995.
