On 6 May 1948, starting at dusk, a company of2 Punjab under Major GA Wright advanced to climb a dominating feature in the Kalal Ridge through broken precipitous and mountainous country. After a non-stop advance throughout the night, the company reached within the enemy stronghold by dawn next day. It immediately came under heavy MMG mortar and small arms fire and one NCO was wounded. Undaunted, Major Wright led a platoon personally round the flank. Keeping cool headed and calm, he organised the final assault and delivered it under heavy enemy fire while over the exposed slopes. With his few men, he pursued the retreating enemy and personally shot down two. The enemy, completely demoralised, abandoned their position and ran away leaving behind 24 dead, 10 prisoners, two 3-inch mortars, one Browning and large quantities of ammunition.
This gallant act of Major Wright was a fine example of leadership, courage and devotion to duty.
