Citation

On 14 October 1948, 2 Punjab was advancing towards Pir Badesar. At about 0300 hrs, the battalion came under heavy enemy fire from the hills surrounding Giran village. The forward most company was held up and another company was ordered to rush up for help. Suddenly the leading section .was fired upon. Naik Waryam Singh, without any hesitation, charged the enemy with his section, killed six and captured five enemy soldiers with rifles. As it had gone dark, the rest of the enemy ran away.

This NCO displayed high qualities of leadership, initiative and devotion to duty. But for this fearless action, the attack might not have succeeded.
