Vir Chakra (VrC)

On 6 September 1965, Major G C Verma was leading his company in an attack on a very strongly defended enemy post in the Poonch Sector. He led the assault in the face of heavy enemy fire at the head of his troops. After a fierce exchange of fire and hand grenades, the enemy was driven from the forward most trenches and bunkers. In the subsequent hand-to-hand fight on the very edge of the objective, Major Verma was hit in the head by an enemy bullet and died. His company, however, captured the objective because of his brave leadership.
