Citation
On 13 December 1971, Second Lieutenant Tulsian Purushottam led a patrol to find out enemy dispositions across a river in the Shakargarh Sector. When his patrol had gone approximately 300 yards across the riverbed, he observed an enemy patrol on the far bank moving towards him. The enemy had organised his patrol into three groups; one group moved towards Second Lieutenant Purushottam's position while the other two groups remained on the far bank to give covering fire. Second Lieutenant Purushottam, displaying great presence of mind, immediately ordered his patrol to take position and awaited the approaching enemy patrol. When the enemy reached his location, he opened fire killing nine enemy soldiers, captured their arms and ammunition and obtained vital identifications. The remaining enemy soldiers withdrew in confusions.
In this action Second Lieutenant Tulsian Purushottam displayed gallantry, determination and leadership of a high order.
