Citation

On the night of 5 December 1971, a company of Gorkha Rifles was assigned the task of capturing the well-fortified enemy border post at Chak Bhura in the Western Sector. As the company formed up for the assault, the enemy brought down heavy and accurate artillery and small arms fire, and inflicted heavy casual ties on the left forward platoon commanded by Havildar Thapa. Undaunted, Havildar Som Bahadur Thapa quickly organised his platoon and led them in the attack. Though seriously wounded by an artillery shell he inspired his men to charge the objective and capture it. Soon after reaching the objective, he succumbed to his injuries.

In this action, Havildar Thapa displayed gallantry determination and leadership of a high order.
