Citation

Thakar Singh was the Bren gunner ofthe leading section of4 Dogra during an attackat Naushera on 1st March 1948. The enemy had positioned themselves on a high feature and were holding the objective in considerable strength. The ascent to the objective was almost sheer cliff and the enemy had pinned down the leading section with automatic and rifle fire. The section was neither in a position to advance nor to withdraw. During the action, the Section Commander was hit and killed. Besides every man in his section was lying wounded. Sepoy Thakar Singh had a perfect route of withdrawal but he refused to leave his post and went forward in full view of the enemy keeping his Bren gun blazing all the time. He prevented the enemy from advancing on his wounded comrades in utter disregard of his personal safety.

Sepoy Thakar Singh showed courage and devotion to duty of the highest order. He remained at his post throughout the horrowing action and alone covered the rescue parties which went forward to collect the casualties.
