Naib Subedar Sultan Mohammed Khan was ordered to take a patrol to reconnoitre a strongly held enemy position in an area in the Kargil Sector. On 8 December 1971, while probing the defence, his light machine gun detachment strayed into a minefield and its members were injured by a mine blast. The enemy was alerted and opened fire with automatic weapons. Naib Subedar Sultan.Mohammed Khan, realising the danger, immediately rushed to retrieve the LMG. Though seriously wounded, he crawled up to the LMG and engaged the enemy till the rest of his party could neutralise the bunker. He then sited his LMG at a vantage point and engaged the enemy and thus contributed to the success of the operation.

In this action, Naib Subedar Sultan Mohammed Khan displayed gallantry and determination of high order.
