Havildar Shantaram Shinde was commanding a platoon which was ordered to clear an area in Rajasthan where the enemy had intruded after the cease-fire. After reaching a point behind the objective, he assaulted the enemy position despite heavy enemy small arms and automatic fire and single-handedly cleared two enemy bunkers. When the advance of his platoon was resisted by an enemy LMG, he crawled up to the enemy bunker to lob a grenade there. As he was doing so, one of the enemy grenades exploded and Havildar Shinde was killed. By that time, however, he had killed a number of enemies and the rest surrendered.

Havildar Shinde displayed commendable courage, determination and devotion to duty of a high order.
