Vir Chakra (VrC)

During the operations against Pakistan in December 1971, Squadron Leader Ashok Pratap rao Shinde led a number of ground attack missions in support of our troops. On two occasions, he was responsible for blunting the advance of enemy armour in the Chhamb-Jaurian Sector. With utter disregard for his personal safety, he led his formation in a determined attack knocking out seven enemy tanks and 27 vehicles despite heavy anti aircraft fire. This action had a decisive effect and relieved enemy pressure on our ground forces in this sector. Throughout, Squadron Leader Shinde displayed gallantry, determination and leadership of a high order.
