On 14 March 1948, during the advance on Jhangar, Jemadar Sher Singh was in command of a company, which was ordered to take an objective. Advancing from a flank, he came under heavy fire from 6 LMGs, 2 MMGs and one BESA. Jemadar Sher Singh, who was with the leading platoon, led a few men to the rear of the enemy and shouting the war cry of the battalion attacked the enemy with such fury that the enemy had to give way In the three ensuing counter-attacks, he showed very great determination and guts and repeatedly staked his own life to evacuate the wounded. He showed utter disregard for his personal safety and was always in the hour of trial a brave soldier.
In this action Jemadar Sher Singh showed devotion to duty, a contemptuous attitude towards death, coolness and courage.
