Lieutenant Suresh Chandra Sharma was commanding a platoon of Rajput Regiment. On 10 December 1971, his platoon was assigned the task of raiding an enemy post in an area in the Sialkot Sector. He planned and organised and executed the raid with exceptional skill and competence. During the raid, when the enemy opened up with two medium machine guns, Lieutenant Sharma, with utter disregard for his personal safety, charged the medium machine gun bunker and captured the gun.

In this action, Lieutenant Sharma displayed gallantry, leadership and devotion to duty of a high order.
