Citation

During the operations against Pakistan in December 1971, in the Eastern Sector, Major Narinder Kumar Sharma, who was serving with a battalion of Kumaon Regiment, was leading the advance of the battalion. The advance was held up by effective fire by the enemy. Major Sharma, after collecting information about the enemy position, took on a bigger task than normally assigned for the force under his command.

He so successfully planned the operation and led the assault that very soon his company was in control of a part of the objective. He charged from bunker to bunker with his men to neutralise them till an obstacle make it impossible to proceed. Soon tanks were ordered to clear the rest of the position. To make the job easier and faster for them, he directed the tanks standing in the open unmindful of enemy artillery and small arms fire. In this action, Major Narinder Kumar Sharma displayed gallantry, leadership, professional skill and devotion to duty of a high order.
