Citation

On 28 June 1999, during "Operation Vijay”, Major Mohit Saxena was the Delta Company Commander which was tasked to capture Lone Hill in the Drass sector. Lone Hill was very imposing feature with sheer cliff faces covered by enemy medium machine guns. The moonlight made his task further difficult.

Major Saxena, who had earlier displayed outstanding courage in the capture of Point 4590 at Tololing on 12 June 1999 by launching a frontal assault, once again led the company column through a treacherous route with utmost speed and secrecy and assaulted the enemy position from the Southern side. The route was a sheer rock face. He personally led the assault and climbed up the sheer rock face of 200 feet length, inch-by-inch.

Inspired by his boldness, the platoon followed him. As he reached the top, enemy brought down heavy automatic fire accompanied by grenades and even stones. Realising that the whole platoon would be wiped out and displaying total disregard for his own personal safety, Major Saxena reached the top and charged towards the enemy firing from his weapon. Seeing his bold action, the section followed suit. His subsequent daring leadership led to the final capture of Lone Hill, fall of which totally unnerved enemy forcing them to flee.

Major Mohit Saxena displayed consistent gallantry in the face of the enemy during capture of feature.
