Citation
At Machhoi in J & K on 23 May 1948, while attacking a feature, Jemadar Sant Singh was in command of a leading platoon. The advance lay over 2,000 yards of heavily snow-covered ground in full view of the enemy. Any outflanking move was out of question because of heavy snow and sheer climb. Right from the start line, his platoon came under MMG fire halting the advance. He kept moving from section to section inspiring his men to carry on without caring for personal safety. His men responded promptly and unfalteringly.
He continued with the assault till 8 p.m. under heavy fire with himself in the frontline with such dash that the enemy fled leaving behind 12 dead. His fearless and vigorous drive contributed chiefly to the success to the attack. In this long the difficult action, Jemadar Sant Singh showed leadership, courage and tenacity of purpose of a high calibre.
