Citation
Jemadar Deb Jang Sahi was commander of a platoon of a relief force in the Congo. While proceeding towards the objective, the platoon came under heavy machinegun and mortar fire and was in danger of being surrounded. At this stage, an enemy plane also bombed and strafed the exposed platoon. Jemadar Sahi and three of his men were wounded. The relief force was then ordered to withdraw. Although nearly incapacitated, Jemadar Sahi conducted an orderly withdrawal under heavy enemy mortar and machinegun fire. While returning, the force was again bombed and strafed four times during which Jemadar Sahi received a severe head injury. There was a roadblock on the way. Though severely wounded, Jemadar Sahi engaged the roadblock. His bold offensive action enabled a vulnerable column to go safely past the roadblock. After the safe passage of the column and only on orders from his company commander, Jemadar Sahi collected his platoon and brought it back safely.
Jemadar Sahi showed disregard for personal safety, fearless leadership and personal bravery in the best traditions of the Army.
