Vir Chakra (VrC)

Naik Appukuttan Sahadevan was section commander in a company of Madras Regiment deployed on the Western Sector. On the night of 15 December 1971, the assault of the leading company was hindered by an enemy medium machine gun. Naik Sahadevan, without any regard for his safety, rushed to the medium machine gun post and silenced it by lobbing grenades. He was hit by a burst as a result of which he died. In this action, Naik Sahadevan displayed gallantry of a high order.
