Vir Chakra (VrC)

Havildar Sangram Singh Rawat was the commander of a medium machine gun detachment during the operations against Pakistan in the Eastern Sector. The enemy launched an attack in strength on his post but Havildar Rawat employed his gun with great skill bringing down devastating fire. When the enemy closed on to the position, his gun went out of action and he was injured. With utter disregard for his safety, he ordered his detachment to move but he himself stayed behind to cover the move. The enemy charged his post but he kept them at bay by lobbing hand grenades.

In this action, Havildar Rawat displayed gallantry, determination, leadership and professional skill of a high order.
