Citation

On 18 May 1948, a platoon of3 Garhwal Rifles, while attacking the Trahgam Ridge, came under heavy enemy mortar and small arms fire. The platoon ran short of ammunition. Jemadar Dhyan Singh Rawat volunteered to carry ammunition to the platoon. He carried the ammunition right up to the forward most position and delivered the same to every section under very heavy enemy fire. While so doing he got a bullet in the heel of his boot. He then went to another position, which too had run short ammunition, and delivered the ammunition there under heavy enemy fire. Again on 17 June, when the battalion attacked Takia Sheru, Jemadar Dhyan Singh repeated the same feat.

Throughout these operations, Jemadar Rawat displayed determination and resourcefulness under most difficult conditions. The initiative and courage displayed by him were of a high order throughout.
