Citation

Major Jaivir Singh was commanding a rifle company of a battalion of Sikh Regiment holding a battalion defended area of Phagla Ridge in the Chhamb Sector on the Western Front in December 1971. His company locality was under heavy pressure. The enemy launched repeated attacks supported by armour and artillery but under his inspiring leadership his company stood fast and repulsed the enemy attacks inflicting heavy casualties. When the enemy managed to penetrate the defences, Major Jaivir Singh immediately led a counter-attack and after hand-to hand fighting threw back the enemy, who withdrew leaving behind twelve dead. Throughout this battle, he not only kept his command intact but also aided in the recapture of a neighbouring post, which had been overrun by the enemy.

Major Jaivir Singh displayed exemplary courage, determination, leadership and exceptional devotion to duty in the highest traditions of the Indian Army.
